decibel
(dB), unit of sound intensity. The faintest audible sound is arbitrarily assigned a value of 0 dB, and the loudest sounds that the human ear can tolerate are about 120 dB. The difference in decibels between any two sounds is equal to 10 log10 (P1/P2), where P1 and P2 are the two power levels.
