Greek philosophers describe the optical principles of the camera obscura (B.C.)

Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.) observed the crescent shape of the partially eclipsed sun projected on the ground thorugh the holes of a strainer, and the gaps between the leaves of a tree. He also noticed that the smaller the hole, the sharper the image. In modern cameras, this is analagous to the diaphragm.
