The morning's meeting

I was invited by my friend Gao Qingxian to visit his institute, the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), where he is associated with the Center for Climate Impact research (CCIR). CRAES is part of SEPA, the State Environmental Protection Administration of China, and is located on the northern side of Beijing, near the site of the earlier Asian Games. Because it was such a long taxi ride, Zhouga accompanied me so that I would not get lost.

As shown below, CRAES is an ground station for a UNEP satellite network. Their big dish provides a unique front to the building. CRAES includes both the buildings shown here.

Here are some of the people we met with that morning. Mr. Gao is on the left. The young woman, a new mother, is Engineer Master Zhang Wenjuan.

We met in their computer room.

Here is yours truly giving a short talk on semiannual cycles of continental aerosol over the Pacific Ocean.

These words on the wall along the hallway proudly announce that CRAES is an earth station in the UNEP/NEPA satellite network, which provides high-speed communication among members of UNEP.

One of the CRAES people explained the satellite network to us (the diagram that he is pointing to). The photo on the left was taken at the dedication of the satellite facility.
