Macau, Part 2: Fortress and Church

We walked to the top of the old Monte Fortress (full name Citadel of São Paulo do Monte, or St. Paul Monte Fortress), not far from the city center. We had to climb some pretty steep hills, as shown above. It reminded me somewhat of San Francisco.

On the top of the fortress is the new Museum of Macau (Museu de Macau).

One side of the fortress offers a great view of the Inner Harbor and part of the city. Here is Kelly making the most of it.

My kind of wide-angle view. Across the harbor is the China's Zhuhai Special Economic Zone, another thriving area.

A closer view on the city, the Inner Harbor, and Zhuhai. Note all the new housing in Zhuhai.

Another view of Macau with Zhuhai in the background.

A view to the north. Most of these buildings are in Macau. Only those nearly hidden by haze are in Zhuhai.

This cannon points toward the spot where visitors emerge after climbing to the top of the fortress.

A general view to the northwest. Note the façade of St. Paul's church, the only part of the building that remains. This is Macau's most famous structure.

A closer view of the façade.

We walked down to the ruins and looked around. The woman is selling souvenirs.

Yours truly in front of the façade.

The back of the façade.
