AUSTIN, Texas - Patrick Conway of Autsin, the longtime newsman responsible for adding the expression "grassy knoll" to the American lexicon, died Monday of cancer. He was 64.
During his career, Mr. Conway served as bureau chief for United Press International in Austin and Dallas and as bureau manager in Atlanta. While coordinating coverage of President Kennedy's assassination, he coined the phrase to describe the area across [the] street from Dealey Plaza.
A reporter covering the story asked Conway to describe the landscape around the assassination site. "The best way I could describe it was 'grassy knoll'" he recalled. "And that's how it got into the story. Now it's always called the grassy knoll."
