Just before midnight tonight, on the eve of the next Millennium, President-Elect Gore was
assassinated while attending a New Year's Eve celebration in Los Angeles.  It was not immediately clear who the suspect was and what his motives were, but found in his clothing were articles about the Millennium and literature from the Army of God, a militant anti-abortion group.  When taken into custody the suspect was making rambling statements about the coming of the Next Millennium, but it was not known whether his action was intended in his mind to prevent the coming of the Millennium or to bring it about.  Pencilled in on the literature found on him was a Dewey Decimal reference number  for a newly published book,  American Holocaust.

President Clinton  was notified at  the White House and was visibly shaken. Through a spokesman he issued the following statement:

The  nation has lost a great leader. I have lost a dear friend. The prayers of my family and the
entire  country are with Tipper and her family.  This cycle of violence must stop. Let us take this time to
work together to heal our nation's wounds.

According to Constitutional Amendments Vice-President-Elect Bradley will be sworn in as the next President of the United States of America on January 20th. Constitutional scholars are not sure when and how the public will be notified of the procedure for selecting a Vice-President.

Historians were not surprised at the news of the assassination.   They are well aware of the Zero Factor, whereby every President since 1840 who was elected in a year ending in zero died in office. Although there have been assassination attempts on Presidents-Elect and murders of leading candidates before the main elections, this is the first time in U.S. history that a President-Elect has been murdered before he had the chance to take office. The assassination appears to be the act of a lone madman, yet questions remain about what may have influenced him to act now.
