Grading and Assignments:
Every week there will be a lab assignment that will be due at the beginning of the lab on the next week. Labs will not be accepted more than a week late. All labs are graded equally and are out of 100 points. Each week we will have a quiz worth 10 points. The lab grade will be based 40% on the lab assignments, 40% on the homework assignments, and 20% on weekly quizzes. Extra credit will be available for those who need it.

Lab Policies
    1.      Lab reports are to be individually prepared.  Original and creative work will be rewarded.
    2.      Be sure to arrive on time.
    3.      Be prepared for a short quiz at the beginning of each session. This 5
10 minute exercise will cover information distributed during the previous class so you will be well-prepared.
    4.      All written material turned in must be typed. Exercises involving math may be hand-written, but neatly. Be sure to show all mathematical work and cite references where appropriate.
    5.      Lab reports and exercises are to be submitted at the beginning of each lab session. Late labs will incur a deduction of 5 points every day.
    6.      If you miss a lab without notifying me in advance, you will lose all points for quizzes and homework for that lab.
    7.      Please bring your book  and a calculator to every lab session

Expectations:
I will attend the lectures so that I can be most helpful to you in lab and during office hours. I will be available to you by appointment after class on Fri. and after 3 on Wed. If these times are not convenient for you and you need help, let me know so we can schedule a time that works for both of us. I will return your labs and quizzes as quickly as possible, and I will provide solutions and feedback so you can see where/why you made errors.

Attend every lecture so you understand the material we will be covering in lab. Be on time and prepared for every lab. This includes handing in your homework at the beginning of lab and reading the material in the text that goes along with the lab. If you are having problems with any of the material or with any aspect of the class, schedule an appointment during my office hours for help. Participate in lab discussions, ask questions and be courteous to your fellow students. If you know you are going to miss a lab, notify me in advance so we can try to arrange a make-up lab or assignment so you don’t lose points. If you are ill please call my office at 874-6105 or E-mail me at hsaffert@gso.uri.edu and leave a message telling me you will be missing lab.

Many exercises in this class will require some knowledge of mathematics. Math help is available through the Learning Assistance Program, EXT 4-2397, as well as through Professor Rahn or me. All written assignments will be graded on grammar as well as content.

Four of our lab sessions will be reviews for the exams. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and clarify information that you may not understand. Your assignment for these sessions will be to bring one question and five vocabulary word definitions (your choice) from each chapter covered (typed or neatly hand-written) to the lab. I recommend that you choose these as you read each chapter. These assignments will serve as your quiz grade for the lab session (i.e., worth 10 easy points toward your quiz grade). We will go over the questions during the lab, as well as any other questions you may have. The last review session, on May 6, is optional and will be open to all sections.
