Problematic verb phrases

Exercise 16-3. Fixing problematic verb phrases.
     
Here are ten sentences from the literature with verb phrases that are too long, with components in ambiguous or incorrect sequences, or with some other type of problem. Identify the problems and fix them.

      1. Each water year was divided into two broad seasons for computing budgets—a dormant season representing the period from leaf fall to the typical end of snowmelt (October 1–April 30) and a growing season (May 1–September 30).

      2. Various types of nonliving biomass, bacteria, filamentous fungi, algae, and higher plants can be profitably used in alternative metal removal processes because of their low cost and the high ion exchange capacity of cell walls.

      3. Polar bear fat samples were collected using a precise sampling protocol from six adult male polar bears (7–13 years of age) to minimize the effect of sex and age on the contaminant levels.

      4. Foams were generated in all experiments with a spinning disk generator.

      5. Although drinking water standards (<5 ppb) were not met under the treatment conditions used in this study, this technology has the potential to reach this cleanup standard as shown by the dramatically reduced TCE column concentration when treated with a high dose of ENV 435.

      6. Ammonium ions are not consumed during oxidation of iodine as indicated by Doré.

      7. The ice stream flows rapidly into Pine Island Bay, in the Amundsen Sea, unrestrained by a large ice shelf at its junction with the ocean, over a subglacial bed well below sea level, which deepens inland.

      8. In technical grade HCH the ratio of the a- to the g-isomer is between 3 and 7 assuming no interconversion.

      9. It is interesting to note that only those chloroanisoles are detected in the marine air that can be assigned to metabolites of chlorophenols for which many anthropogenic processes are known.

      10. In some cases, not all samples were collected, such as some of the precipitation samples for metals.
