18-1: Large-scale structure of sentences
Using the procedure described in
Chapter 18, express the structure of the verb phrases (predicates) in each of
the ten sentences below in terms of the large-scale functional units verb (V),
object (OD or OI), adverb (A), and complement (CS
or CO). Be aware that some sentences may have more than one verb
phrase. Then summarize the abbreviated structure of each independent clause
(e.g., SVOA). You may do the same for the entire sentence if you consider it to
be easier.
1. Sentences in English are constructed around five basic patterns.
2. Howard would later sue the investigators for fabricating evidence.
3. The beautiful girl from high society learned to dance at the age of three.
4. Students can also receive tickets if they do not have a fraternity/sorority parking sticker.
5. Researchers insist that children will not deliberately lie about traumatic events.
6. Glaciers and ice sheets are controlled by the climate and must change as conditions change.
7. Some of the sand deposited by the waves and currents is also picked up and deposited by the wind as extensive sand dunes.
8. The waves and currents work the sediment over and over again, rounding the fragments and sorting them into even sizes.
9. The investigators wanted to determine whether the salience of items affected the accuracy and completeness of a witness’s report about those details.
10. Previous studies focusing on the spectral composition of incident solar radiation have shown that biological processes and chemical reactions are strongly wavelength dependent.
