Assignment 14, due Friday 26 February 1999
How Jim Marrs thinks and uses evidence
Read:
This assignment is designed to introduce you to "Crossfire" by Jim Marrs. First skim the book to get a general idea of how it is laid out. Then find its main conclusions. Last, look more carefully for the evidence and how it is used to support the conclusions.
Answer these questions:
1. Go through "Crossfire" and see how or whether Marrs lays out in advance his principles for dealing with evidence. Summarize these principles, citing page numbers.
2. Does Marrs discriminate between the various types of evidence we discussed earlier, particularly between testable and untestable evidence?
3. How does Marrs actually use evidence? Does he follow his stated principles? Wherever possible, cite examples.
4. Give Marrs’s main conclusions and the main pieces of evidence he uses to support those conclusions.
5. Comment on how carefully Marrs uses evidence and whether you agree that his conclusions were drawn properly from his evidence. Cite any examples you feel would be helpful.
