Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology
Part 1
Our home base in Hong Kong was the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), a new university that is about the graduate its first class. Here are two sets of pictures taken around HKUST. I call it "the city on a hill" because it is built on a steep hillside overlooking Port Shelter. It reminded me very much of my alma mater MIT, with interconnected buildings and an emphasis on science and engineering.
The main entrance to HKUST.
A view to the left of the main entrance. You can see some apartment buildings for staff and visitors in the distance.
Another view near the main entrance.
The main entrance again.
Just inside the main entrance is this huge atrium with a balcony in the distance that overlooks the sea. The place is named "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium." I wondered what jockeys had to do with the university until recently, when I learned that the place was built largely with money from gambling on horse races, and hence the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
A view looking in the opposite direction in the atrium. The main entrance is straight ahead, and the big wall with the name of the jockey club is right above the pillar.
How's this for a classy hallway?
This is the balcony adjoining the atrium that looks out over the sea. The glass wall straight ahead is for the library.
A view of the sea from the balcony. The passageway below leads to student housing just beyond it.
A view looking rightward from the balcony. The tables on the veranda below to one of the student restaurants.
