A Visit To Notre Dame University
In all the time I spent on the farm in the 1940s to the
1960s, I never got to visit Notre Dame University. It is only a few miles away,
and I have driven past it on Route 31 many times. Uncle Donald (Haslett) and his
family eventually moved to just a few blocks from it. So I decided to visit the
campus on this trip, after Janie and I had lunch with cousins Marcia and Dave
Haslett. The students were away on summer break, and the campus was quiet. It is
a beautiful place, obviously rich in history. Janie said it was the kind of
American campus she had envisioned from China.
We walked nearly from one end of the campus to the other, and
back again. We had no real plan, just wandering to whatever next place looked
good to us. Along the way we saw the golden dome (of course), the inside of the
church, the tail end of a wedding (complete with bagpiper), a wonderfully
manicured campus, a beautiful bookstore, and two ponds complete with swans and
ducks. I hope you enjoy the result.
