5 February
The first hourly exam
The first hourly exam will look very much like class
discussion and the homework assignments. It will not be multiple-choice; you
will have to write out the answers, including constructing basic diagrams and
solving simple numerical problems. It will be a mix of definitions, short
answers, longer answers, and problems. You will not need to remember the values
of numerical constants, but you will need to know how to work with them. I have
posted the answers to the
second set of homework problems.
Joanne has provided me with a list of questions posed in the
review sessions today. As time permits, I will post answers to them during
Monday and Tuesday.
I have noticed that quite a number of you seem unfamiliar
with the material that I go over during class. Please recall the passage in the
syllabus to the effect that you should have read the material before class and
be ready to discuss it. Not doing this will make it unnecessarily hard for you
to prepare for the exams. I also remind you that you should be spending three
hours outside of class for each hour inside. Anything less may put your grade at
risk.
Here is a good way to prepare for the exams. (1) Make sure
you understand the Chapter Summary. (2) Be able to define the key terms. (3)
Know how to answer the Review Questions assigned for each chapter. (4)
Understand the major points in the Critical-Thinking Problems that were
assigned.
4 February
This week we will have the first hourly exam on Wednesday the
7th, as scheduled. It will cover whatever we get through on Monday. Homework
assignment 3, for Chapter 3, will be due on Friday the 9th. (You can work on the
assignment in preparation for the exam, and pretty it up for Friday.
21 January
Last Friday, TA Joanne Bintz discovered a problem with the
laboratory room—it seems to be much too small for
the size of our class. We will discuss the situation in class Monday.
