Cheung Chau Island
Part 2: A walk along Peak Road

From the Praya you can easily cut across the island to Tung Wan Beach. There to the right begins Peak Road, a paved walkway that follows the crest of the island to Sai Wan, another little village with its own smaller harbor. Parts 2–4 show some of the sights along this beautiful walk.

This is a view from Tung Wan Beach, the island's most popular place to swim. The line in the water is a shark net. In the background are some of the many other islands.

A beautiful sport facility along the walk.

A typical scene along Peak Road. Much of the time we were indeed walking under a canopy like this one, sometimes much thicker. We could hear exotic birds that made us feel that we were in a tropical jungle.

A little memorial along the walk. The person being honored is General Guan Ying-Chang, a much-revered hero from the time when China was divided into three smaller countries.

A beautiful view from along the road. We were practically the only ones walking that day.

Kelly in the hot sun along Peak Road.

A rooftop view back toward the village. Note how densely packed the dwellings below are.

We saw little communal areas like this along the road, too.

This sign attests to the fact that the communal areas are official, not private.

Another canopied stretch of Peak Road.

At this point, we were near the island's cemetery on the other side of the road. This spot was a place to meditate.
