Introduction To Evidence Sheets

Students in previous versions of this JFK course have found it helpful to organize their thoughts on various important ideas by summarizing the evidence for and against them on individual pages, which I call evidence sheets. These sheets start with very simple propositions such as "At least one shot was fired that day" and range upward in complexity until they reach the critical "JFK was killed by a conspiracy" and "JFK was not killed by a conspiracy." These evidence sheets are filled out as the semester progresses, and eventually reach 20–30 in number. This year's format will be simpler than the last time around. Next to each piece of evidence will be written whether it is direct or indirect, testimonial or demonstrative, and weak or strong (these terms are described in the essay on evidence). At the bottom will be summarized the strength of the evidence for and against and whether the proposition is retained or rejected. These sheets will also offer external participants the chance to simultaneously focus on the evidence in the same way that we do, and to comment on the choice of evidence and how we evaluate it.
